The role of digital solutions in adult education has grown significantly, helping to make language learning more accessible, engaging, and effective.
Digital Learning Opportunities in Language Education: Tallinn Language Centre’s Experience
In recent years, the importance of digital solutions in adult education has increased considerably. Tallinn Language Centre / International House Tallinn, with over 30 years of experience, has consistently developed flexible and learner-centred language learning opportunities, combining traditional classroom teaching with modern digital solutions.
Today, digital learning plays a key role in English language courses at Tallinn Language Centre (TLC). Digital solutions are not a separate add-on, but an integrated part of the learning process. It is important to emphasize that TLC’s online lessons are not recorded lectures — learning takes place in real time, through active interaction between the teacher and fellow learners.
Flexible Learning Options for Everyone
TLC offers three main study formats:
- face-to-face classroom learning,
- online real-time learning in ZOOM,
- hybrid learning — a format where learners participate either in the classroom or online in the same lesson, choosing the mode that suits them best.
In hybrid learning, the teacher conducts the lesson in a physical classroom. Online participants in ZOOM can see the classroom, the teacher, and the students in the room, while classroom learners can see online participants. All learners and the teacher are connected and can interact directly.
Currently, approximately 25% of TLC courses are conducted fully online in real time, while around 75% of English language courses take place in a hybrid format.
These different formats provide flexibility, making it possible to learn even for those with limited access to traditional classroom education — such as busy adult learners, people from rural areas or smaller towns, and individuals with mobility challenges.
Summary
TLC’s experience shows that digital learning does not replace traditional teaching — it enhances it. Flexible learning formats, qualified teachers, and a learner-centred approach create an environment where every adult learner can develop at their own pace and in a way that suits them best.
The thoughtful use of digital solutions helps make language learning more accessible, inclusive, and effective — which is one of the key goals of modern adult education.
