Levels

The course levels at Tallinn Language Centre follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) – the international standard developed by the Council of Europe and used to measure English language proficiency. It divides language ability into six main levels,
from A1 (Beginner) to C2 (Proficiency).

At Tallinn Language Centre, we use the CEFR to assess students’ English, place them in the most appropriate course, monitor their progress, and issue certificates showing the CEFR level they have successfully completed. In our school each CEFR course level consists of 200 academic hours in total. This includes 160 contact hours with a teacher, either in the classroom or live online, and 40 hours of independent study. The course is divided into two semesters, each consisting of two modules. One academic hour lasts 45 minutes.

Unlike many language schools that offer only the six main CEFR levels, Tallinn Language Centre divides the CEFR into ten (10) carefully structured course levels. This allows students to progress more gradually and consistently.

  • A1
  • A2.1 & A2.2
  • B1.1 & B1.2
  • B2.1 & B2.2
  • C1.1 & C1.2
  • C2

Smaller progression steps make learning more manageable and help students build confidence.

The number of study hours to reach each CEFR level varies depending on motivation, previous experience and exposure to English. Based on the experience of Tallinn Language Centre, most learners studying consistently complete one course level  during one academic year.
